painting motherhood – Katie m. Berggren | Sydney photography blog

‘Painting intimate moments of motherhood’, that is how artist Katie m. Berggren describes her work. I first discovered Katie’s artwork about this time last year & I instantly ordered some of her prints for my home.  Her paintings resonated with me in the intimacy between the parents & the children in her work, the way the mothers & children are woven into one another with such emotion, it was beautiful & familiar. Her art is warm & heartfelt & personal & I wanted to share the pictures I have on my wall at home with you…

The picture below brought to my mind an image of my mother & I, when I was a baby in 1978. I’m told I preffered to sleep in my mothers arms. When I became a mother it felt natural for for my little ones to sleep in my arms this way too…

The intimacy & quiet connection I felt in Katies work is similar to something I feel compelled to capture when I am photographing families together…

When I saw this next picture I felt like I was looking at a picture right out of my own family albums. I was amazed at how someone I had never met before was creating art that made me feel like I had seen it before. The truth is I had seen it before & I had felt it before… in my childhood… in my own moments of motherhood… & through the lens of my camera…
