almost two

Anouk will turn two this week. I’m planning a small party for later this month to celebrate. The tradition I have had until now is to ask Ava what sort of party she would like & then we have a little celebration that represents what ever her favourite thing is at that age. When Ava was two I asked her what sort of party she would like & she said “puppies” so we had a puppy party. When she was 3 it was ‘princesses’  and when she was 4 it was ‘tinkerbell’. A few weeks ago I asked Anouk the big question…  me: “Do you know you are turning two soon Anouk! What sort of party do you think you would like?”

Anouk: “um?…. candles”

me: “yes we will have candles, but what kind of party would you like? What do you really like?”

Anouk: “um?… cake”

me: “yep we will have candles & cake, but what kind of cake should we have?”

Anouk: “uuuum? cholocate!”

me: “OK chocolate, but I mean what is your favourite thing to have at your party?”

Anouk: “candles”    (It went on like that for a little while til I gave up & figured I might have to choose it myself).  Then a week later I thought I would try again…

me: “Anouk what kind of party should we have when you turn two?”

Anouk: “um? broccoli” . Finally an answer, but not really one I can work with. I decided that perhaps for Anouk we should keep it simply about the cake & the candles & a few other treats. So I got out the ‘sweets & treats’ recipe books & sat on the lounge with her, with the idea that instead of a theme, I will just make a few treats that she can choose from the books herself. That way it will still feel like the party represents something she likes.

me: “see these recipe books  Anouk?”

Anouk: “yes”

me: “You can choose some special party food to have at your party when you turn two”

Anouk: “OK!” (*has a browse through pages of cakes, bikkies etc*)………….

me: “OK, so what kind of food would you like at your party!?”

Anouk: *closes books*  “ham. I like ham”
