First day of grade 1 and grade 4.
When they were little and at home with me every day, with some sadness I would think about how one day they would both grow up and go to school. I couldn’t imagine it, but I knew it was in our future. In the same way I know that the years will come where they will be in high school. I imagine that stage like it’s part of some distant version of our lives, way off in the future. But it’s not. The stages are all so short. The stage around the corner is always nearer than we realise.
When they each reached pre-school age I only sent them 2 days a week and I home pre-schooled on the other days. We gave Anouk an extra year at home before starting school, because her birthday is in May, so we had the option of her staying little for longer.
Yet for all the savouring and holding on a little longer, the time still keeps rolling forward. The stages ahead become our right nows and our yesterdays.
All we can do is be present and enjoy the stage we are in. Don’t wish for another stage or you’ll miss the current one.
Grade 1 and grade 4. I don’t know how we got here already, but we’re going to love it.
